Another project that the College of Engineering assigns at George Fox University is for first-years to design and fabricate a Valveless Oscillating Air Engine from scratch.
The project began with research on how the engine worked. Students then derive functions and variables to determine the precise lengths, angles, and dimensions required for engine oscillation. After the calculation phase, students transition into detailed hand drawings, followed by creating a fully developed 3D assembly in SolidWorks. Once the design is finished, students fabricate the engine using manual machining with metal lathes and mills. The project is finished with creating a torque performance report in Excel, allowing students to visualize their engines performance.
Over the course of the project, I put in 58+ hours of detailed design, modeling, fabrication, and creating reports.
