I have been exploring the hobby world of FPV (First Person View), and recently completed a hands-on project building my own FPV drone.
This build was surprisingly more challenging than just connecting parts together. It pushed me to gain an in-depth understanding of the electrical systems and structural design that was included with building the drone. The process included component sourcing, wiring, cable management, soldering, and 3D printing, each contributing to this finalized functional system.
One notable learning moment came during troubleshooting. I came across a soldering mistake where excess solder had bridged two pads, creating a short circuit. Even while using a smoke stopper for protection, the issue still caused damage to my main components. I found that this required careful diagnosis, some cleaning, and ultimately replacing parts of the flight controller and ESC.
This hobby has been very rewarding and has taught me to stay patient in my work, how electrical and structural systems work in unison, how to properly seek guidance when coming across an issue, and has given me an opportunity to continue enjoying working with my hands during my free time.
I am excited for my next build!
